Population and crime increases
In Nevada major cities like Las Vegas have fueled the growth of our state but when a state grows the general trend of crime is as the population, which is to say also increasing. The Nevada Department of Corrections has proved it worth dealing with the increased growth of population in Nevada and the rising crime trend that follows along.
Despite this growing crime threat Nevada has begun to rise from the ashes of recession and growth can be seen all across Nevada and Las Vegas

The general crimes you look at property crime you look at length of sentence, people historically now and you can look at corrections across the country, are usually uh I would say imprisoned for crimes against people uh fairly violent crimes there is somewhat of a misrepresentation that uh are a lot of people in prison that haven't committed some act against another person. umm Weather it was armed robbery or home invasion or stealing someone’s property certainly the majority of people housed in our system have harmed another person in some way or many persons. so uh I, you know you look across the country at the cost of incarcerating someone, referring to non-violent offenders, all across the country the courts systems and the judicial system and the legislature recently uh the attorney general the U.S attorney general have uh looked at crimes associated with drug trafficking and drug use and the selling of narcotics and the housing of those individuals in a federal facility should be something that the legal system should look at. So uh i think that in our state we have done a pretty good job of looking at the impact the legislature has and the sentencing of those individuals- James "Greg" Cox |

Well I think that you look at nation wide correctional populations have decreased by almost two percent. The only facilities that have increased their populations are federal bureau, which is interesting, that means that the federal government has increased incarcerations while the states have decreased. umm You know in our state what we do is we look at our two largest counties, Clark and Washoe, and uh and take a look at sentencing in those two large counties, the state actually pays a, a, entity, a private entity, to project populations and they do a fairly good job considering we were the fastest growing state for eighteen years, and we’re certainly growing again. so uh what you do is uh you look at the two largest and you try to figure out jail population and such and its really an intensive look at intake and how many people are coming into the system, what’s their sentence structure look like, and then you just look at the two largest counties again and look at how many people are coming in and what their crime picture looks like in those areas of crimes. Generally when you grow you have an increase in crime across the country. |
